One of the hottest items in instructional technology is the use of “clickers” or audience response systems. Students use remotes to answer questions before, during, and after a lesson thereby allowing teachers to get instant feedback about student understanding. Dustin Frank will lead a workshop for eInstruction clickers using the Classroom Performance System (CPS). If you are using eInstruction clickers or want to learn more about what they can do, this workshop is for you! Because of the official name change from Library Media Specialist to School Librarian, that occurred during the ALA Midwinter Meeting (see article below) it was only right that our Community showed the respect in changing its name also.

CHICAGO – The American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) Board of Directors voted at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Boston on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, to officially adopt for the profession the title School Librarian. A recent AASL survey indicated confusion, misperceptions, and inconsistencies about various job titles in the school librarian profession. The AASL Affiliate Assembly requested that the AASL Board of Directors choose a title for its professionals that is clear to other educators, administrators, and the public, and that presents a common nomenclature for all publications and advocacy efforts.

AASL leadership reviewed the data and identified the advantages and disadvantages of the various titles. After a focused and extensive discussion, the AASL Board of Directors voted to adopt school librarian as the title which reflects the roles of the 21st-century school library professional as a leader, instructional partner, information specialist, teacher, and program administrator.

As the overarching strategic goal of AASL is to achieve universal recognition of school librarians as indispensable educational leaders, AASL will work to advance and promote the title school librarian, and will open dialog concerning stakeholders’ needs, wants, and preferences; the current realities and evolving dynamics of the professional environment; the capacity and strategic position of the association; and the ethical implications relevant to this decision.

The American Association of School Librarians, a division of the American Library Association (ALA), promotes the improvement and extension of library services in elementary and secondary schools as a means of strengthening the total education program. Its mission is to advocate excellence, facilitate change and develop leaders in the school library field.

Interactive Whiteboard & Clicker Showcase at ESU 9 Hastings - Feb 3 - Graci Gillming

On another topic, I have several Sarah Dessen books and also bought My Sister's Keeper by Jody Picoult. My high school girls love those books & I would like to get some more by those authors. I would appreciate any recommendations on the best of the books by them that are appropriate for high school age. (basically I need to avoid sexually explicit passages, in particular).
Thanks for the help on either topic!
They presented at the NEMA Conference in October on Friday morning, "Research Matters! Becoming the Key Component in Your School's Research Curriculum." Their message is 'how to bring the library into the classroom’ a very forward thinking approach to the 21st Century Learner. Discover how two media specialists working collaboratively with a Project-Based Learning Coordinator, created meaningful learning opportunities for their students. We hope that you can join us that day to glean from what they have to offer.

I asked Theresa how this will benefit the elementary and middle school grades and her response was... " We will be talking about the TRAILS online test that we use, and there is now a 6th grade version. We will also be talking about Noodletools which is great for
elementary. Finally, we will be discussing ways to get to know teachers and strategies for working with students. I think those areas will be beneficial to staff at the elementary level."
CHILDREN, Memphis, Tenn. (Nov. 12, 2009) – Dr. Larry Sanger, co-founder of Wikipedia, has launched a new website designed to gather and organize educational videos for students ages 3 to 18. The site, www.watchknow.org, launched in October and currently features more than 11,000 videos across 2,000 categories on subjects such as math, science and history. The nonprofit site features new software, specially developed for the site by Dr. Sanger, which allows wiki-style collaboration among users. "Think of it as YouTube meets Wikipedia, filtering out everything but quality educational videos," says Dr.Sanger. "WatchKnow.org links together content from traditional sites, and also allows users of the site to improve the organization of the video categories, which makes finding the video you need much easier."

With native grasses and fallen leaves rustling in the breeze and the symphony from flocks of birds streaming south, late fall is a great time to explore Rowe Sanctuary. This month’s program will take advantage of this natural music by offering a workshop called ‘The Music of Nature - The Nature of Music’ presented by former UNK professor of music Annabell Zikmund, and Rowe Volunteers Susan Elmore and Jackie Flohr.

UPDATE REMINDER
Teachers who are new to your school this year need to be updated in ODIE. This update will help
guarantee when a Media item is ordered from the online catalog it will be delivered to their present school and not delivered to their previous school. If they are first-year teachers they will need to set up an ODIE account. A Power Media account will also need to be set up for them either through their Library Media Specialist or Susan Sandoval mediacenter@esu10.org .

Inclement weather. When it is too dangerous for the route to be traveled, all the items that were to be delivered that day will be canceled unless you call or email by the next day and ask to have them reordered.

Michael Miller is our full-time courier. He will be at each school approximately the same time each designated day. He delivers up to 25-46 schools each day; Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Please remind teachers to use the items before the due date, and have the items in the pickup area before Michael arrives.

Media Online Catalog: If you do not know how to connect to our Media online catalog through ODIE, contact Susan. Free in-service on how to use the catalog is available to all schools. https://odie.esu10.org

HOW DO I EXTEND MY MATERIAL?
Logon in ODIE and go to the Library link. On the left column (pink side) open My Reservations. Find the title that you would like to extend for 1 additional week by clicking on the blue EXTEND button. A message will be generated and sent to our Media Center. Your extension will be accepted or denied. If it is denied, a message will be sent to you stating the item could not be extended. Your online request needs to be sent no later than the day before your pick up date to be accepted. You can always call the day of your route before Michael arrives also.
ESU 10 suggests using NROC content for supplemental course activities to enhance the existing material in high school courses.
Cellphones have been called "the new paper and pencil" or "the new laptop," and they could be in the hands of as many as 10 million to 15 million schoolchildren in the next few years. ESU 10 is hosting the DAPPER II room and are in need of 11 volunteers to:

- be at the room early to welcome the presenter(s).

- provide support and aid as needed to the presenter(s) (distribute handouts, etc.).

- make sure the room is ready for the next presenter(s).

There's nothing to it! And for your efforts, you'll get a FREE NETA T-shirt...and more importantly you've done your civic duty for a great organization.

Check the schedule at http://www.netasite.org/conf2009/schedule.html and search for Dapper II. Take note that there's also a Dapper I & III. Look for a session you'd like to attend in that room and let me know which one it is (day and time). If you'd like to do more than one, just say so. If you don't care, tell me what sessions to avoid.

Email me at ggillmin@esu10.org to let me know which sessions you'd like to host.

Thanks for your help! More specific details will follow as NETA nears.

http://www.ncnewspress.com/archive/x1959823637/Librarian-quarantines-books

Please note that nothing has to be done for another year while the Consumer Product Safety Commission reevaluates their ruling. AASL lobbyists in Washington have been assured that provisions will be made for libraries. At worst, books with a 1985 copyright (the year lead ink was banned in books) will have to be weeded from the collection—and if they are that old, they probably need to be discarded anyway. At Kearney Public Schools this would affect all elementary and middle school libraries, because it includes children 12 and under. We need to keep watch on this so we are prepared for what the ruling is on February 12, 2010. I sincerely hope libraries are exempt from the ruling, because it will set back our mission to instill a lifelong love of learning and reading in children.

Not an authority on lead in book, but I'm beginning to think I am. ;- )
Place organize their AR books. Thanks.
